Critical Thinking Assignment
Paper details:

Students should utilize the following 6 steps as a guide for their report.

  1. Explanation of problem:

How does society and your personal experience influence your idea of what a family should be?

Design a 3-generational genogram of each a family highlighting family interactional patterns.
Complete a worksheet identifying the national origin, religion, language, economic class, work history
Write a 2/3 page report that compares and contrasts their personal family information with a minimum of three (3) current trends in today’s families, as described in the text: shifts in gender roles, increase in divorce rates, decline in rates of marriage, rise in cohabitation, same sex-marriage/couples, increase in singlehood, unmarried parenthood, choosing to remain childless, single parent families/blended families.
Demonstrate how these trends are or are not evident in the student’s family over time.

  1. Evidence: Students will provide historical evidence and current statistics that supports the dynamic nature of the student's 3 chosen trends (shifts in gender roles, increase in divorce rates, decline in rates of marriage, rise in cohabitation, same-sex marriage/couples, increase in singlehood, unmarried parenthood, choosing to remain childless, single parent families/blended families.) Students must cite at least one scholarly source per chosen trend; a minimum of 3 scholarly sources are required for this paper.
  2. Influence of context and assumptions: By analyzing their research and integrating the data, students will explain how families have evolved over time and how certain trends have impacted changes in the family structure. Students will then make assumptions as to why these changes have occurred. They will address the specific influences (societal, economic political, educational, etc.), and make further assumptions as to how the trends may continue to evolve in the future.
  3. Student position:

Given the changing nature of family, students will describe what they believe the makeup of the average family of 2070 will be. They will specifically predict how the roles of men, women, and children will change.
Students will explain how their Genogram/Family Heritage Worksheet support their predictions. Has it demonstrated a shift in the roles of men, women, and children?
Students will also express how their personal opinions of family been affected by this critical thinking project?

  1. Conclusions and related outcomes:

Based upon research, observations, and experiences, students will address the advantages and disadvantages of a dynamic family structure.
Students will derive some conclusions and explain how these changes will offer positive and/or negative influences on the future of the American society.

  1. Integrative Reasoning:

Students will demonstrate quantitative literacy by researching and generating data about the changing dynamics and trends within the family, applying the data directly in this assignment, and then reaching conclusions based on their analysis of the data.
Students will research, integrate, and analyze statistical and/or census data related to their chosen trends.
Students will graph their findings to clearly demonstrate the change in trends within families, and then discuss how these trends are or are not evident in their own families. The Genogram will assist in highlighting patterns of trends within the student’s own family as well.
