Select at least 4 of the 9 current sitting justices on the United States Supreme Court. Once you have selected these judges, watch their opening statements as part of their confirmation proceedings before the Senate Judiciary Committee (these opening statements are all posted online on multiple platforms, such as Youtube, and should be easy for you to find). Once you have done this, compare and contrast the (at least) four different opening statements and answer the following questions:
- What similarities did you find between the different opening statements?
- What differences did you find between the different opening statements?
- Did you see any common themes or narratives that the different prospective (at that time) justices pursued during their opening statements? How did the prospective (at that time) justices pursue these themes or narratives in their opening statements?
- Identify and describe at least two aspects of our course text which helped you better understand and appreciate the opening statements you selected for purposes of this essay.
