Description

We have been focusing on how dance is reflective and constitutive of culture. In Units 3-4, we traced how social dance shifted from partner-focused to an emphasis on the individual, highlighting how this reflected shifting cultural events/views. Yet, at the same time, despite the focus on the individual, there is a sweeping feel of the movement of the group within disco, house, and vogue, right? Thinking about this trend toward both an emphasis on individuality and groupthink, thoroughly discuss one way you find this reflected (or not) in the mainstream culture of today (perhaps social media, politics, parenting styles, etc). What are other examples of how mainstream culture focuses on individuality and/or groupthink? Remember to tie in one class reading (including an in-text citation) to your initial post.
