Case Study Essay

As a future nurse practitioner you will encounter patients and parents who have a variety of perspectives on immunizations.

You are scheduled to do a well-child check on Maxine Booster, a 2 year old who is currently healthy. You review the chart and note that Maxine has not had any immunizations since her 2 month well-child check. She initially received Hepatitis B (Hep B), Diphtheria, Tetanus, & Pertussis (DTaP), H. influenzae Type b (Hib), Rotavirus (RV), and Polio (IPV).

Maxine Booster’s mother states the following during the history and well-child check encounter.

“Maxine had a fever and seemed to feel bad after her shots.”
“People say vaccines have toxins causing illness and even autism.”
“I don’t want her to get sick. Can she get these diseases? What should I do?”
Reflect on the mother’s statements, your personal and professional perspective, and immunization controversy.
