Purpose: To increase your familiarity with different types of supporting materials.
Instructions: Go to the American Rhetoric website (americanrhetoric.com) and choose a speech from the Speech Bank. After checking out the speech, answer the following questions. COPY AND PASTE the full question and then respond directly under each one separately, This is required.
Questions:
What speech did you choose? List the speaker, title, location, and date of the speech.
List each type of supporting material—narratives, examples, definitions, testimony, facts and statistics—and indicate whether or not the speaker used it effectively. Give an example of each type of supporting material the speaker used.
How effective were the supporting materials the speaker uses? Explain your answer.
How did the supporting materials help the speaker achieve her or his specific purpose?
What have you learned about supporting materials that you’ll apply to your speeches in the future?

Determine which of the patterns of organization might be useful to create a logical flow of information for the statements. STATE IT. Select one pattern of organization to use to organize the statements. It can be one of the six that you defined in Step 2 or another one from any of the lesson materials or another source.

Step 3 Arrange the statements about friendship. STATE YOUR ORGANIZATION YOU ARE USING AND THEN ORGANIZE THEM IN THAT PATTERN.
Arrange the statements to form a logical flow. Modify your arrangement as many times as needed to fit one of the organizational patterns you learned about in the lesson.
Step 4 Write the heading Introduction.
On the top of a sheet of blank paper, write the heading Introduction. Determine which statements you would include in the speech introduction. Then fill in the rest of the components of an introduction.
Step 5 Write the heading Body.
On the top of a second sheet of blank paper, write the heading Body. Determine which statements you would include in the body of the speech.
Step 6 Write the heading Conclusion.
On the top of a third sheet of blank paper, write the heading Conclusion. Determine which statements you would include in the conclusion of the speech. Then fill in the rest of the components of a conclusion.
Step 7 Enter the information.
In your word processing document, enter the headings and associated statements.
Step 8 Answer the questions. COPY AND PASTE THESE AND THEN ANSWER UNDER EACH ONE SEPARATELY.
