Part I: Term Paper Outline & Article Summary – 5% of Final Grade
- Step 1: Identify a newspaper or magazine article on the area of interest (i.e., racial
profiling). The article can be from either the United States or Canada. In addition, the
story needs to be substantive, which means that it must be a headline article in the
media source (either national or local). This is necessary because the story must be
long enough to contain several aspects of the area of interest that you may decide to
focus on in your final paper. - Step 2: Read the article and identify the focal area and several of sub-issues that are of
interest to you. I advise using a highlighter for this part of the assignment. - Step 3: Identify 3 academic sources that discuss the specific aspects of your chosen
focal area. For this step you must locate 2 primary academic sources (i.e., sources
where a researcher has conducted academic research) and 1 secondary source (i.e., a
book or a literature review) that is not a course textbook. - Step 5: Now you are prepared to complete the media article summary and outline.
This part of the paper is comprised of: - A one paragraph summary of the newspaper/magazine article.
- An outline of the remainder of your paper that demonstrates your understanding of
your sources. - A copy of the magazine or newspaper article.
- A copy of the abstract of each article you identified and a copy of the table of
contents of the book. If you identified an academic literature review instead of a book
you can instead provide a copy of the first page.
