Media is an essential component of how we are socialized, and how we form our beliefs, opinions and
biases about other people in society. The Miscast and Seldom Seen activity showed how people of
different identity groups are either mischaracterized, stereotyped, or used only as side characters to
support dominant groups.
However, media can also be a powerful tool to reshape our perceptions about different identities in a
positive manner. For your Unit 1 summative, you are to select a media item that you believe has worked to
change our societal biases or raise the profile of a previously misunderstood group of people.
You may choose a movie, novel, television show, or particularly powerful image that has had this kind of
impact that is no more than 2 years old. Your study must include:
(2-3 paragraphs)
A summary/description of the media piece – include screenshots or a copy of the image in your summary)
Describe the theoretical framework that would best describe the experiences, interaction and social
implication of what’s taken place and explain why.
(3-4 paragraphs)
An analysis of the media piece that includes
What pre-existing discriminatory ideas this piece challenges
How this piece effectively works to deconstruct existing biases and advances the cause of Equity and
Social Justice, and social change.
Any potential short and long term impacts the piece might have on society (that are different from the
above components).
