Description

Choose at least two of the following to discuss one of the poems you read this week in class: diction, denotation, connotation, imagery, syntax, figurative language, sound, rhythm, symbol. Please DO NOT conduct research. I want to know your observations about the author’s use of these elements in the text. If you quote directly from the text, please use correct MLA formatting (help for MLA formatting can be found in the “Course Documents” section of Blackboard). Paper must be at least 500 words.

Tips:

  1. Include the title of the poem you are referencing in your introductory paragraph.
  2. Include a claim at the end of your introductory paragraph that discusses what you believe the meaning of the poem is.
  3. Use the literary elements of your choice listed above as evidence of how you came to the conclusion the meaning of the poem is what you said it is.
  4. When discussing diction and imagery, you may choose to quote parts of the poem. Keep in mind diction means single words. Imagery includes phrases and longer strings of words.
  5. You must have works cited page listing the poem if you quote parts of the poem in the paper. Use your MLA citation guide for help with the works cited page and for help with internal citations.
  6. Remember when writing about literature to use the present tense.
  7. Remember to check your grammar.
  8. Reference the rubric in your syllabus for grading criteria.
