In mini-lecture 5a-1 we saw that in English, possessor DPs are located in the specifier of DP, and the possessive morpheme -s is in the head of DP. We had already been placing possessive pronouns like your, my, his, etc. under the D node. Finally, demonstratives like this, that, these, those also appear under the D node.
Your job in this question is to investigate and analyze St’át’imcets possessive DPs.
You can make the following assumptions:
• The determiner ta is located in D.
• The St’át’imcets DP obeys X-bar theory.
• If specifiers are present, they will appear on the left of the head, and complements will appear on the right of the head.
The clitic =a ‘exis’ comes along with the determiner, so it will appear and disappear with the ta determiner and the =a can be safely ignored.
Remember to ignore the acute accents; these are governed by phonology.
Abbreviations used in morpheme glosses: 1 = first person, demon = demonstrative, det = determiner, erg = ergative (this is a type of subject marking; don’t worry about the difference between su and erg), exis = existential, pl = plural, poss = possessive, sg = singular, su = subject, tr = transitive.
