Basically, there are 3 major components to the paper. In the first paragraph, you should introduce the topic; why it is important. By the end of the first paragraph, I should know what it is you are going to discuss, and want to read more. The middle section of the paper should expand or develop an idea (problems/flaws about the topic, suggest how to further study this topic, how to apply this knowledge, etc.). Your idea(s) should be backed up with references to previous literature. The subject matter should be linked somehow to the class discussions and/or course material. The last paragraph should summarize, and ideally give your own personal slant on the topic. Thus, the critical thought piece.
