Career Relevancy
HIS220_DQ3.jpgThe government has a tremendous impact on how businesses are run. We understand where that impact came from and why government intervenes as it does by studying our ideas of freedom, civil rights, and civil liberties. While these may seem irrelevant, these ideals impact legislation which business must abide by. Similarly, the government is restricted in some of its interactions with businesses for the sake of preserving personal and professional liberty. Consider, for example, the impact on a career in journalism if the government was allowed to censor anything they deemed contrary to their own agenda. Political freedom is vital to businesses.

During the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction in America the idea of civil liberties and rights for everyone was on the forefront. With the help of these two main events in history, parts of the country started to recognize that people of all colors, nationalities, and sex were deserving of a good life. They deserved to be free and to be recognized as not only citizens, but equal citizens. Reconstruction was not perfect, and it’s important to remember that in the workplace. For example, a better understanding of the failings of the Reconstruction can help in understanding potential difficulties to be faced when growing a business in the Southeastern US. Over time, our government and citizens have striven to improve freedom, equality, democracy, and equity. We have learned the benefits of these ideals through conflict from the days of the early colonies to the times of World War II. We now recognize and aide other countries when they are dealing with problems concerning the values we hold dear. Importantly, understanding the friendships and grudges developed as a result of global wars and clashing opinions on the ideas of freedom, equality, and equity is vital to surviving in what is now a global economy.
