POST 1) A terrorist as defined in the book is the “unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social goals.” Often times terrorists will strike at innocent people in large groups to install fear and get their message heard. Freedom fighters on the other hand are ‘fighters in wars of national liberation against foreign occupiers they see to over throw.” The differences between these two groups is that the freedom fighters are a “group” whereas terrorists are often scattered across the country and wait for their time to strike. Terrorists also fight to gain something for a higher cause and typically don’t fight to -overthrow° the government. It is easier for a country to fight against freedom fighters than terrorists. Freedom fighters are not a foreign organization and could be easier held accountable for any crimes they commit. They also have to use tactics that would keep them popular to the public. It is difficult for a country to defend against terrorist because they can strike at random. However, the United States has a clear policy to combat terrorism. This policy includes “do not make deals with terrorists or submit to blackmail, treat terrorists as criminals and apply the rule of law, and bring maximum pressure on states that sponsor and support terrorists by imposing economic, diplomatic and political sanctions and urging other states to do likewise:
POST 2) Freedom fighters, are members that fight against in their mind an unjust govemment or to represent the marginalized citizens. This can be similar to terrorist because with terrorism, both could be trying to rise up against a government or nation. Yet they are different as well. There seems to be a nobility around freedom fighters that isn’t attributed to terrorist. Freedom fights are looked at as people fighting for a bigger picture, a brighter future while terrorist are not. Terrorist are fighting for chaos and power compared to a freedom fighter, a group fighting for the marginalized. Freedom fighters are fighting to acquire rights, or land while terrorist are destructive. It’s about destroying people, or things. A country could defend against terrorism by having a strong military and intelligence program. Security and intelligence go a long way in preventing terrorism. Yet when defending the country against freedom fighters, a country has to be transparent and equitable to make sure freedom fighter groups don’t grow. A country must also make sure to keep a strong military that can squash any potential coups. While terrorism and freedom fighters both cause u eval in a
country, their motivations and methodology is very different.
