Using Alone Together (book: anything from intro- chapter 3) or the Clay Shirky reading (under course documents), write a lens paper. A lens paper uses one close reading as a way to see a movement or scenario–for example: what is the political power of social media (Shirky) on current issues, such as: #metoo, #blacklivesmatter. #never again. How does the movement you choose relate to Shirky’s comments about slacktivism, and activism. How do the online movements create change–real or hoped for? How do the online movements create momentum, and bring awareness–and is this enough, or only a start? Movements such as the ice bucket challenge, or the Arab Spring are possible topics as well. If you know a movement in history, such as the civil rights movement, or an event such as the Holocaust, you could re-image this moment if there had been social media–using Shirky as your lens.
OR:
Use Turkle, Alone Together, as a LENS to write about the future with an aspect of technology: The future of relationships, the future of education, the future of medicine, the future of sports, the future of families etc. You will need to refer to Turkle throughout. If you want to find a new lens–please show me to be sure it fits.
