Though this moment has become somewhat of a joke or cliche due to its proliferation, it isn’t without critical value; if nothing else, it allows us to consider about how something, like the forces of good and evil, may not be as far removed from each other as we’d like to think. For this assignment, you will take a similar approach to the examples listed above and choose a moment from two different texts that, on the surface, seem like they have very little in common with each other. Once your two moments have been identified, through close reading, analysis, and textual evidence, your task will be to effectively argue and prove that the two are much more alike than we may initially suspect. Ultimately, your paper should make its own claim or argument to help your readers understand how/why these two “unlike” moments are, in fact, connected, and you must use textual evidence to support that argument. Though you may need to incorporate some additional information from elsewhere in the texts, please keep in mind that you are supposed to analyze the text, not just give a plot summary of it. We’re all familiar with the plot of the texts, so no need to reiterate it here unless necessary to your claims. Also please be aware that the comparisons you make needn’t be perfect: the two moments you compare may offer an extensive meditation upon the way death affects a family, but they’re likely going to be expressed in differing ways or feature somewhat conflicting attitudes.
