don’t want to spoil the fun of watching these movies. So, I will be very brief on
telling you what these movies are all about. Das Boot is about life on the
famous German U-Boat during the World War II. U-Boat symbolized German
engineering might as well as high discipline among its crews, and highly
successful campaign against the Allies naval forces and shipping. But what was
it really like to fight a war as it crew? This movie will definitely let you know.
Letters from Iwo Jima is about the lives of Japanese soldiers who died whiling
defending the Pacific Island called Iwo Jima during World War II. Often,
Japanese soldiers are portrayed as uniformly and insanely dedicated to defend
the glory of Japan. Is that true? This movie tells us how unique each solder was
in terms of their attitude toward the war and their commitment to it. Yes, there
were those Japanese soldiers who blew themselves up with hand grenade. But
there were also, some who could not and did not. Lastly, there is Stalingrad. In
the summer of 1941, the German army invaded Russia. There initial success in
advancing deep into heart of Russia was one of the most remarkable
achievements in history of military affairs. However, when Russia’s famous and
infamous winter hit the Germans, Hitler’s military campaign began to
disintegrate. In this movie, views are given a painful glimpse into the misery that
set on German soldiers in retreat from Russia. There was no longer the mighty
and disciplined German war machine that had conquered most of Europe
before the Russian campaign. In its place, human fragilities and imperfections
are revealed. I am suggesting these movies so that we can understand what the
war was like to individual soldiers on the other side of the divide, or should I say,
the enemy side.
