As discussed within the module, media has a significant influence upon our understandings of crime and justice. For this assignment, I would like you to apply what you have learned about media to analyse the content of your choosing. The media selected can be from the news, a film/documentary, a graphic novel, a print novel, etc. but you must receive my approval at least 72hrs prior to your submission. Remember to only select one option for your analysis (some options are provided at the end of this document).
Using one of the media orientations presented in the module, analyse the content of your chosen media. How might the content and/or form of the media shape the public’s understanding of Western Criminal Justice, its policies, practices and/or the administration of justice?
A few questions that may help guide your thinking while answering this question:
1) Which media orientation (theoretical perspective) are you adopting to analyse your media content?
2) Are any of the mainstream/ critical theories discussed in previous modules applicable to your understanding of the content? How might they be applied?
3) How does the form of media influence the dissemination of meaning and how the audience (you) interacts with this content?
While there are no specific page requirements, consider that it should hold all the components of a complete argument (introduction complete with thesis statement, supporting arguments and conclusion) and engage substantially with course materials. For alternative formats, the same general guidelines apply.
You are being graded on:
• Your ability to develop a sound argument. Hint: Start with a thesis statement! This thesis can be your response to the above bolded question.
• Understanding and application of course content and materials.
• Both the quantity and quality of your engagement with this course content.
• Clarity of explanation, reasoning, and discussion.
• Critical reflection and/or creativity in how you apply content and present your work.
