Opinion Summary 5. Part of what makes the United States such a diverse society is immigration and the influx of immigrants from all over the world.
Review the following websites and articles:
• Map: Sanctuary Cities, Counties, and States
• Houston Police Officer Dead, 1 Hurt; Illegal Immigrant Suspect in Custody
• Dangerous California Sanctuary Policy Leaves 3 Victims in Wake of Fatal Shooting
• Crimes by Illegal Immigrants Widespread Across U.S.—Sanctuaries Shouldn’t Shield Them
Immigration is a widely debated topic in criminal justice today. Many jurisdictions are providing sanctuary for undocumented or illegal immigrants. Although many seek a better life, many are also increasingly engaging in violent crime. Based on these articles and your knowledge, what is your assessment of sanctuary cities? Should we allow these criminal offenders to be protected simply because they are in the country illegally when American citizens would not get the same protection? In other words, should these individuals, who have already broken laws just being in the country, get services, such as medical and schooling, without having citizenship and without paying taxes that are assessed on American citizens? Articulate your reasonings.

Opinion Summary 6. In this module, you are researching the impact that illegal immigration is having on the Criminal Justice System, particularly law enforcement.
Review the report Delegation of Immigration Authority Section 287(g) Immigration and Nationality Act from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] agency’s website, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Review the information on the 287(g) Program, which allows for partnerships between local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to identify, detain and deport illegal immigrants (noncitizens) based on criminal activity.
Provide an assessment, in your own words, of the program, including the Jail Enforcement Model and the Warrant Service Officer Model. Also provide a discussion of the success rate of the program. Do you believe this is an effective use of law enforcement resources (meaning, should local and state law enforcement agencies be concerned about and use their resources to assist the federal government in doing its job regarding illegal immigrants)? Do you agree with allowing local and state law enforcement officers to act as federal officers in their jurisdictions and within local/state correctional facilities? What do you see, if any, are negatives to this program? Do the benefits outweigh the negatives, or should this type of program be abolished? Explain your reasonings.
