A genogram is a visual representation used to map family structure, record family
information, and delineate family relationships. The purpose of such a chart is to provide a
broad view of the biological and social relationships between family members across
several generations.
For this assignment, you will use the provided case study to create a genogram.
Week 7’s reading book contains valuable information that can be used to help you complete
your genogram of the Weasly family. After reviewing the information on genograms, read
the following case study and then follow the assignment instructions listed below the case
study.
Case Study- Weasly Family:
Harry and Ginny Weasly were married in May 1963 in Cranbrook, BC, where they lived and
worked. Harry was born in 1937 in Bombay, India and immigrated to Canada in 1957 and
died in 2000. Ginny was born in 1945 in Creston, BC. They both practiced the Catholic
religion. Harry worked as an engineer with CP Rail and had an annual income of $30,000.
Ginny worked part time as a medical clerk at a local clinic and had an annual income of
$10,000. Harry was the dominant figure in their relationship and often had trouble
controlling his emotions. Ginny struggles with seasonal depression and retreats to her
bedroom when overwhelmed.
Harry and Ginny have three children. The eldest, Neville was born in November of 1963. The
second, Ron, was born in October of 1967. The third, Luna, was born in August of 1969.
Harry and Ginny divorced in 1978. Harry married Sybill (born. 1960) in 1986 and they did not
have any children. Ginny did not remarry. Ron is the index/identified person for this
genogram. It is written from Ron's perspective.
Neville and Hermione married in 1981in Cranbrook, B.C, where they live and work. Neville
practices the Catholic religion and Hermione is Jewish. They have identical twins, Fred and
George, born 1986. Both boys attended pre-school and then public school. In 1987
Hermione had a miscarriage. Neville is a chemical engineer and has an approximate annual
income of $130,000. Hermione is a registered nurse and has an approximate annual
income of $90.000. Fred is a firefighter and has an approximate annual income of $85,000.
Fred had a substance use problem with prescription drugs. Fred was married to Padma in
2015 and separated in 2017. They have no children. George is a heavy-duty mechanic and
has an approximate annual income of 70,000. George has lived with Lavender since 2010.
They have one child, Fleur born 2013.
Ron met Pansy, who was an International student from England, they lived together from
1985 to 1988. They had one child, James born 1986. Ron lived with Cho from 1989 to
- Cho immigrated from Hong Kong. They had one child, Katie, born 1990. Both of Ron’s
children live with their biological mothers. Ron has chronic depression and uses alcohol to
cope. He attends a program called Bounce Back that teaches strategies to manage
depression. Ron has a seasonal job as a landscaper and has an approximate annual
income of $40,000. Ron has a dog named Padfoot.
Luna came out as a lesbian in 2009 and she married Alicia in 2011. Luna and Alicia are both
social workers for the Ministry of Children and Families (MCFD) and have an approximate
annual income of 75,000 each. They had a baby, Cedric, who was conceived with Alicia’s
egg and a sperm donor, born in 2014.
Harry and Ginny had a hostile relationship during their marriage that involved physical
abuse. Hermione has a distant relationship with Ginny, Ron and Luna. When Fred and
George were little, she limited visits with Neville’s family. Hermione has a close relationship
with Fred and George. Luna was sexually abused by male family friend when she was little.
Luna had a hostile relationship with Neville and Ron growing up. Since she has come out,
their relationships have become closer.
Here are the instructions and marking criteria for the assignment:
Part A: The Physical Design of the Genogram (15 marks total)
After reading the above case study, construct a genogram of the Weasly family. Use the
following bullet points to ensure that you have included the correct information in your
genogram:
• Accurate use of symbols associated with a genogram. (1 mark)
• Includes a key at the bottom of the page that clearly shows all symbols used in the
genogram. (1 mark)
• Males are positioned to the left when representing relationships (1 mark)
• Represents the relationship dynamics between at least three family members. (3
marks)
• Includes all generations represented in different levels (2 marks)
• Genogram is organized and legible (Hint: Spread it out on large paper). (2 marks)
• ALL information from the scenario is represented on the genogram (5 marks)
There are several ways to submit the finished genogram. It can be included in the word
document that contains parts B and C of the assignment, it can be scanned and uploaded
separately, a picture can be taken and uploaded separately, or if you used an online
program you can attach the link in the assignment upload spot.
Part B: Analyzing the Information Using the Genogram (12 marks total)
After you have completed your genogram, answer the following questions (in 1-2
paragraphs each), using the provided headings to organize your answers:
• Weasley Family Relationships:
How would you describe the family relationships in the Weasly family? Remember to
discuss both strengths and areas of concern. (2 marks)
• Family Patterns:
List and describe at least three family patterns in the Weasly family. (i.e. divorce,
mental illness, specific physical illness etc.). (2 marks)

What strengths/opportunities can you identify in the Weasly family? (2 marks)

What challenges/risks can you identify in the Weasly family? (2 marks)
• Strategies:
Choose one person or one couple from the Weasly family and discuss three different
strategies you could use to help them become stronger, including why you chose each
