Attend an advocacy/policy meeting that is of interest to you (ideally related to your policy area of interest). Write a brief response paper that addresses the following in 2-4 pages: 1. Describe the group holding the meeting 2. Describe the agenda/purpose of the meeting (if there is a written agenda, please attach) 3. Who was at the meeting/event? (please describe in terms of roles, professions, how many were in attendance, describe the attendees in terms of what seemed relevant) 4. What was discussed? 5. What were the dynamics in the room? (Who had the power, how were decisions made?) 6. What were the main policy objectives of this meeting? 7. How did this meeting relate to the policy-making process we have been discussing in class? A brief description of an actual meeting: -There were about 60 people at the meeting. -Out of those present who could vote, approximately 30 board members. -There were about 30 observers. -The representative of Mathylde Frontus invited everyone to the Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony in one minute. -The representative for Scott M. Stringer invited everyone to the Irish Heritage Breakfast within a one minute time period. -The Public Library’s representative described available programs for this month within one minute. -People from the neighborhood of District 21 presented complaints. -These complaints include: -Pedestrian Safety. Proposal: install more traffic signs -Parking Issues, not enough room to park. Proposal: get rid of trucks that park overnight -Overcrowded Schools. Proposal: open new schools. The principal of a local school complained of her school being overcrowded, so she proposed to open a new school at 650 86th street, which will have 592 seats for students. The board members almost unanimously voted yes, except for one board member whose main concern was the lack of parking spots due to a new school taking its place.
This meeting shows how the policy-making process works. As discussed in class, first, there is a proposal and people who support the proposal present their argument for their proposal. Then, the board members vote on the issue, and if the majority votes yes on the proposal, and it gets passed.
