Assignment:

Team Learning Project: Case of Janet – Stage 2

This week you will discuss the case study with your group and submit a bulleted list of the five theoretical approaches or therapeutic techniques that your group has agreed upon for the case analysis.

Project Overview:

For the TLP project, your team must analyze the “Case of Janet” from five (5) different theoretical perspectives. You must select five theoretical perspectives or therapeutic techniques of your choice and share the results of your analysis as a PowerPoint presentation.

Case of Janet:

The client, a troubled woman of 33, is in your office at a community mental-health center because it is a requirement of her parole. She reports that she has always had difficulties handling her family and her personal life. She says that she had a relatively stable marriage until she found out her “old man was running around with other women.” Although she filed for a divorce from him, she never appeared in court, so she is uncertain about her marital status. She reports that after the separation he “disappeared” until quite recently, when he “reappeared out of nowhere” and took their son, now 10, to live with him. She also has two girls, ages 8 and 10, who still live with her. The client says that once her husband left, she was forced to resort to stealing to support the family and her drug habit.

Janet has been addicted to cocaine for four years. During this period she has had behavioral problems with her two daughters, as well as the son. Eventually she moved in with her current boyfriend, and the behavioral problems with the children escalated. She reports that she is on parole for a theft charge and is afraid that she will have to go back to prison for parole violation because of her drug use.

Janet lets her parole officer know that she has seen you and that she wants to get some help “to get her life together.” A few days later her parole officer calls and says that her urine test is “dirty,” showing traces of several drugs. The parole officer asks about your treatment plan for therapy and requests that you write your opinion on whether the client should be back in prison.

You will complete the TLP in three stages:

Stage 1 – COMPLETE
Stage 2 – Identify the five theoretical perspectives or therapeutic techniques that you will focus on for your case analysis.
Stage 3 – Create a PowerPoint presentation to share the results of your case analysis. The PowerPoint presentation should be structured as follows:
Title slide (including presentation title and names of team members)
3-5 slides PER THEORETICAL ORIENTATION OR THERAPEUTIC APPROACH that summarize key information (since there are 5 approaches, this will constitute 15-25 slides)
2-3 slides with conclusions (overall comparative analysis of the approaches)
Reference slide (you do not need references beyond the text book, but you must include the textbook as a reference; include other materials as applicable)
