Last week we talked about number sense. Students also have to develop operation sense, “a highly integrated understanding of the four operations and the many different but related meanings these operations take on in real contexts” (de Walle, 2014, p. 100).
Please start by explaining the importance of operation sense and what teachers can do to develop such an operation sense. Refer to the four different structures for addition and subtraction problems and explain one of them (such as part-part-whole) in detail. Why is it important that we present all of these structures to our students?
