After reading the selections from Hawthorne’s fiction and studying the lecture notes, prepare a two-page essay (double-spaced) in which you discuss
Hawthorne’s use of ambiguity in dealing with the sin, guilt, and punishment of two of these characters: Mr. Hooper or Aylmer, and Arthur Dimmesdale or
Roger Chillingworth. (Consider questions such as these: What is the man’s sin? How is he being punished—internally or externally? Is he truly guilty? Does
Hawthorne sympathize with him?) Cite sentences from the story which are examples of ambiguity, and indeterminacy
