Escalation of commitment Prompt: It is important to be aware of when one is overcommitted to a course of action due to invested resources and/or commitment bias because this overcommitment can lead to negative outcomes (Sridharan, 2022). Griffin, Phillips, and Gully (2020) discussed that an important behavioral process that influences decision making is escalation of commitment to a chosen course of action (sometimes called the sunk cost fallacy). Griffin et al. (p. 323) defined escalation of commitment as occurring “when a decision maker stays with a decision, even when it appears to be wrong.” Ohlert and Weibenberger (2019) researched the effectiveness in decision aids to enhance de-escalation of commitment, and Kalmanovich-Cohen, Pearsall, and Christian (2018) studied the effects of leadership change on team escalation of commitment. Edmonson (2018) noted that an issue in cross-functional team collaboration and successful outcomes can be the concept of “hard to learn when you already know”, adding that successful leadership should have situational humility, curiosity, and foster an environment of psychological safety. Given the literature on the topic, have you ever experienced a situation where escalation of commitment interfered with the success of a project, and what would have been a viable solution for overcoming this?
