Anatomy of life

The first two years of life are arguably given more attention than any other period, perhaps because changes during this time are so dramatic and so noticeable. Many researchers believe that what happens during these years provides a foundation for one's life to come.

  1. In the text it states, "During the second year of life, children begin to recognize themselves as they gain a sense of self…" What is your earliest experience in life regarding your sense of self? What were you doing? Who were you around? Has that "sense of self" followed you throughout life? What is your temperament (introverted, extroverted, etc.) and can you trace back aspects of your personality to who you were in Infancy and Toddlerhood (you may need to ask your parents or caregivers during infancy & toddlerhood a few questions…)?
  2. On page 103, the text describes four different attachment styles: secure, ambivalent, avoidant, and disorganized/disoriented. Which one do you most resonate with? Why? What were some life experiences that shaped your "attachment style"?
