What is an annotated bibliography?
A bibliography is a list of citations to resources such as articles and books. An annotated bibliography not only lists each of the sources but also provides a description, summary and/or critical evaluation of them. These descriptions and evaluations are called annotations.
The purpose of the annotation is 1) to summarize the main arguments of the source and 2) to critically assess the relevance of the source in relation to your chosen topic.
What good is an annotated bibliography?
The Online Writing Lab at Purdue University explains the value of annotated bibliography:
“To learn about your topic: Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you're forced to read each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. At the professional level, annotated bibliographies allow you to see what has been done in the literature an where your own research or scholarship can fit.
To help you formulate a thesis: Every good research paper is an argument. The purpose of research is to state and support a thesis. So a very important part of research is developing a thesis that is debatable, interesting, and current. Writing an annotated bibliography can help you gain a good perspective on what is being said about your topic. By reading a variety of sources on a topic, you'll start to see what the issues are, what people are arguing about, and you'll then be able to develop your own point of view.”
The Assignment
Locate five scholarly sources (academic articles, books, book chapters, etc.) related to your topic. For each of your five sources, create an APA style citation and then write an annotation describing and evaluating the source. Make sure that you are not only describing the source, but also critically evaluating each source in relation to your topic. Each annotation should be about 150-200 words.
Your annotation should include the following information:
• An explanation of the main purpose of the source
• A short summary of thesis, arguments and key findings of the source
• Any shortcomings, limitations or omissions that you notice
• The strengths and weaknesses of the source
• How the source compares with other sources you’ve included in your bibliography
• The value and relevance of this work as a contribution to the topic you’re exploring
• How the source shapes your argument
• How you can use the source in your research
• How the source has changed how you think about your topic
Total word count: 750-1000 words, not including citations.
