Recent study of a variety of challenges of living (e.g., physical health problems, mental health problems, role performance problems) has focused on risk, protection, and resilience. Available research suggests that some risk and protective factors are common to a variety of problems of living. Werner and Smith have done the most comprehensive longitudinal research to date on risk factors and protective factors. We could think about risk and protective factors in terms of a life course framework, identifying biological risk and protective factors, psychological risk and protective factors, social risk and protective factors at several levels.
Choose a specific challenge of living of interest to social work (e.g., homelessness, poverty, anxiety disorder, violent behavior, cancer, racism etc.).
