One of the ways that we identify and involve ourselves in our field is the ability to clearly ask and answer questions that relate to effective practice. Formulate a question about an issue or problem that you have wondered about and propose an examination of the issue as it relates to the education of children in New York City. Examples are methodologies of practices and programs in public or private schools and centers, Daycare or Head Start sites; ways of integrating families into the life of the school; ways of reflection and assessment of teachers or directors' practices within theoretical and practical frameworks identified (Standard 6a) 2. Read and critically examine the background research using at least fifteen peer-reviewed articles and the appropriate conceptual background material using secondary sources to prepare the literature review. Use our Google Classroom and in-class groups, library faculty, and instructor to collaborate on and refine the literature review. (Standard 6c) 3. In the methodology, demonstrate awareness of the ways that researchers engage in scientific methods, either quantitatively or qualitatively. Identify how your proposal complies with the Code of Ethical Conduct (for example, maintaining confidentiality, showing sensitivity and having respect for children, families and colleagues; complying with laws such as those pertaining to child abuse, the rights of children with disabilities, school attendance; complying with state and/ or city standards for content and child outcomes and adhering to other professional standards affecting early childhood practice, such as institutional review board guidelines for conducting research). (Standard 6b) 4. Review the Findings/Results in your literature review as a way to note the trends occurring in your area of proposed study. Explain how the studies you examined in the literature review inform your proposed examination of the selected issue as it relates to the challenges, attitudes and perspectives involved in assisting parents and others in learning how to better meet the needs of children in an urban, multicultural, multi-linguistic environment. (Standard 6d) 5. In the Discussion/Conclusion section of your proposal, critically examine the findings of studies in your literature review and discuss how they might predict and inform early childhood educators about the particular area you propose to investigate. Based on the trends noted, assess and predict what might be expected if your proposed study were conducted. Use this section to discuss the importance of your proposed topic and suggest directions that future research might take. (Standard 6d) 6. Recommend and advocate ways that practicing teachers may utilize research skills for the improvement of practice. !your appe~di~ present a plan for dissemination; dissemination of your findings might be a presentation at a professional or research conference, a publication, a policy brief, a professional learning wor~~hop, amon~ other outlets; present a summary of your findings from your proposal to peers or fam1hes, depending on the relevance of the topic to current practice in your school or site.
