Blithedale Romance - Westervelt

Your final project will be a literary research paper on The Blithedale Romance. Along with Melville, Hawthorne
is perhaps one of the most celebrated writers of the antebellum period and was quite popular, having published
five novels and numerous short story collections. Not surprisingly, his work has garnered a large body of
criticism over the years. For Writing Project #3 develop an original argument to answer one of the questions
presented below. Use the Beacon search engine on the Del Mar College libraries website to locate peerreviewed scholarly sources that can help you develop your argument. How does your understanding of the
novel differ from that of other critics? How would those critics likely respond to the same question?

  1. What is Westervelt's place in all this? Do an analysis of the character of Westervelt. If Westervelt literally
means "western world," then how does his character reflect on the people in the book and Hawthorne's view of
    society?
