Description

To tell the story of Brazil, as with each of the other countries we are addressing in this course, is to tell the story of intermingling cultures — specifically African and European. This blending of aesthetics is the source of the vast majority of Brazilian musical styles. Thus, any scholarly study of Brazilian music must be mindful of the cultural context from which it arises — in order to understand the music, we must also understand the people who make it and the society in which it is made. You will be asked to address this phenomenon in your paper. Essentially, your research should examine not just the topic of Brazilian music but also who creates it and what function it serves. Above all else, your discussion of Brazilian music should be positioned within a historical, cultural, and sociopolitical framework.
