Carrer exploration

  1) Write a 5-paragraph essay (2 pages, double-spaced total length) over a Career. You can use any resources (websites, articles, blogs, personal interviews, etc.). For some helpful information, see the career exploration information at Career Zone New York and the US Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics websites. 2) Use the information you collect to write your essay. 3) Include the information outlined on the next page of this document. 4) The paper should be in the APA format – see the handout for details. a. Give it a title – for instance, Exploring the Nursing Profession b. Margins of one (1) inch all sides. c. Times New Roman font in 12 point d. Double spaced and Align all to left margin e. In the upper right header, type your last name and page # f. Use in-text citations and a bibliography per APA format! g. Heading (example): Paragraph One: Your Interests and the Career (4 points) 1) In a topic sentence, state a profession that interests you. 2) Explain in 1-2 sentences why this job interests you. 3) Briefly, (1-2 sentences) describe the personal interests, values and/or working styles that will help you succeed in this profession. (Examples: hard working/good attendance/knowledge of/like to build things/ problem solver/know who to ask or where to look for answers to questions, if you don’t know/honest/good customer service skills – speaking / explaining things clearly/and simply/ good math skills/ etc). Paragraph Two: Job Description/Tasks performed (4 points) 1) Provide a short description of the occupation. 2) Give a brief description of the work environment of the profession. 3) Briefly describe three tasks a worker in this profession performs. Paragraph Three: Training, Range of Wages and Job Outlook (4 points) 1) Describe the training required for an entry-level position in this profession (e.g. trade school, college with a major in engineering, professional certification, license?). 2) Describe the range of wages for this profession. 3) Describe the job outlook for this occupation. Paragraph Four: Similar Occupations (4 points) 1) Identify one similar occupation to the one you are writing about for this essay. 2) Briefly, (2-3 sentences) explain how this alternate profession is similar to the one you are exploring in your paper. Paragraph Five: The Future (4 points) 1) Describe your vision for your possible future in this profession. What will your professional life look like after 5, 10, and 20 years? (This question is about your sense of the opportunities for personal growth available in this career.)
