But, those aspects has been diminished since the ideology of materialism has made people from East Egg to tear apart the land for their personal use. For instance, Nick states at the end of the novel “the fresh, green world”(180). This is an analogy to the American Dream on how during the 1920s immigrants believed that the United States was a place of optimism and possibilities. But then Nick explains how people (especially the upper classes) have taken advantage of a once beautiful land for their personal gain and destroy its purpose related to the land of opportunities.
