In this chapter, Rolheiser gives a bit of background on Spirituality and where our notions of spirituality originate. He also writes that the state of spirituality today is basically pluralistic — and explores the idea that there are so many options and things being pushed on us in the realm of church and faith. There are many voices telling us how to be “spiritual.”
But then he outlines what he calls the 4 Non-negotiable essentials of a Christian spirituality. First, Discuss the 4 essentials. Do you agree with each of these essentials? Why or why not? According to Rolheiser, what happens when we don’t have one of his essentials, which causes an imbalance? Again, do you agree or disagree? What would you add to this list, if anything?
