“chuck it home.”
Scenario 2. In the fourth grade, Stan is playing ball with his classmates and is placed in left field. During
the game, a ground ball is hit in Stan’s direction, he picks it up and throws it only to have it bounce two feet in
front of him. His teammates get antsy and yell at him to “chuck it home.” On the second try, Stan picks up the
ball and throws it with all of his might grunting to show the effort. Unfortunately, he only manages to throw it
five feet in front of him. By this time, his teammate in center field picks up the ball and throws it home after
two runners crossed home plate. To show their frustration, Stan’s classmates yell “Ah you throw like a girl.”
causing Stan to cry and receive even more harsh criticism.
Next year, Stan is again placed in the outfield. Another ground ball is hit in his direction, this time when he
picks up the ball he throws it past home plate and over the 20-foot fence surrounding the field. His classmates
look at him with amazed disbelief.
