Coding, Categories, and Themes

Respond to at least one of your colleagues’ posts and reflect on their data analysis. Explain how clearly you as the reader can see the connections between codes, categories, and themes. In your response, include more examples of your work to compare and contrast your process with your colleagues.

A code is a concept that has been given a name and is used to give a description of what the researcher is looking to accomplish in a research. In a typical sense, a researcher might highlight a word which has been used to describe what the researcher is trying to find out. A researcher might highlight a phrase, a word, or a sentence that gives a close representation of what they might be researching in the research. After the researcher has highlighted the code or phrase, then they will assign it a code. The main aim in this aspect is that the code should be as close as possible to the phenomenon that is being researched. The difference between code and a theme is not that important because of the length of the code and the theme. A code is shorter than a theme. Themes are quite long and describe more than a code.

After the themes and codes have been put in place, it will be important to have a connection between the measuring units. After the measuring units have been analyzed and identified, it will be important to put them in categories. All codes which are related will be put in the same categories or in the same group of codes. A researcher might want to put them in the same category and identify them with a common code. The most significant aspect when this is the case is that the research participants should be in the mind of the researcher. The code should be as close to the language of the research participants as much as possible. As more codes are put in categories or more categories continue to be in overarching categories, it will be important to have names which are more abstract in order to have inclusivity in the research. One of the guides that should be used is that as more abstraction is attained in a research when more and more categories are achieved, it will be important to still make sure that the language that is used is still close to the research participants as much as possible. It will be important to have all data subsumed into one large category. For the most part, it is important to have a few top-level categories. As more categories are being built, it is important to have a clear understanding of how the various categories are related to one another.

As the data is categorized, there will be emerging predisposing assumptions and it will be prudent to have this data put in such categories and ignore those that do not conform to these hypotheses. It will be upon the researcher to read and reread the data to make sure that they have been done to meet the requirements and the goal. It will be necessary to have a major section in the analysis so as to read through the data and approve it.
In the video transcript, there are categories that were identified. One of the codes is that of training. The theme could be “quality training”. From the research articles, it is clear that the research is about quality training and how it affects qualitative research.
