Cold War the world of espionage
During the Cold War the world of espionage (intelligence collection and analysis) was transformed by technology, from wiretapping to satellites, as basic human intelligence (HUMINT) was accentuated by information gathered through signal intelligence (SIGINT) and imagery intelligence (IMINT). Cyber represents the latest technological frontier in the world of espionage. Based on Part I of Buchanan's The Hacker and the State, what would you conclude are the most important ways in which cyber has impacted the world of espionage?
Additionally, cyber has allowed for the development of specialized software such as malware that can be used for surveillance purposes on individuals or organizations. Furthermore, with so much activity taking place online – whether it be conversations conducted through messaging apps or financial transactions made via electronic payments – more detailed insights into target nations are now possible than ever before. This data can then be analysed by government agencies who use it for both defensive measures as well as offensive operations against adversaries. It is clear then that cyber espionage is transforming the way states conduct themselves in terms of gathering intel and carrying out operations abroad.
