Choose one of the following scenarios and compose the appropriate negative message associated with it.
Follow the guidelines for adapting your message to your audience (Ch. 2) and delivering negative messages
(Ch. 9). As with all business messages, be sure to also adhere to the basic criteria for effective messages (Ch.
1).
In each of the scenarios, your main goal should be to promote change. You want to build support for your
position while also considering the needs of your audience.
You’ll need to do a little research to determine whom to address the message to. Include the contact
information on your written message. You do not have to actually send the message to the contact, but I
encourage you to do so.
You should write the message on a separate document that you save and upload.

  1. Choose a company to contact about an issue you’ve encountered with their product or service. If you can’t
think of one, ask your friends and family members and offer to advocate for a resolution on their behalf.
Compose an email detailing the problem and your desired response.
  2. Identify a current political topic on which you disagree with your congressional representative. Write a letter
that outlines your views for him/her and calls for change.
  3. Think of a problem you’re experiencing at work or in a group you belong to. Consider all the details of the
issue and develop a solution for it. Create a memo or email to the involved parties. In it, detail the problem and outline the solution.
