Secondly, start researching at Congress.gov what the current proposed, active, and passed legislation is on this issue.
Then research the issue more in-depth. Find academic, news articles, and other sources about the issue. What are the most important milestones in the issue’s history that you may want to present and are pertinent for understanding the current issues? You can also reference in footnotes or endnotes other articles, laws, and cases.
The case study should include the following:
One to two paragraph background/abstract about the topic with a question that you are probing. This question could be related to what you may ask instructors and students to do in the curriculum section.
Background on the issue (2-3 single spaced pages), theoretical overview or leading approaches to study the issue (a few paragraphs to a page – single spaced), and what the current issues are now (a paragraph or few). This part should be 3-4 single spaced pages, well-documented. Also be sure to consider major themes discussed this year.
Then you should set up a curriculum for students to examine the issue. How may you envision teaching about this topic in the class? This can be as simple as writing a few discussion questions. Or do you set-up a simulation? A Debate? Please describe how people engaging in your case study may delve deeper.
Finally, what do you hope people take away from your case study? Is it a better understanding of some key principles you read about this semester (refer to the textbook chapters). What does your case study reveal in terms of the major issues you have read this semester? In what ways should legislative politics change or stay the same, per the lessons learned from your study? Also, what can people do to make changes? What type of action do you recommend?
