Similarly, while my mother excelled academically she faced barriers when trying to pursue higher qualifications due largely to her gender at the time – something which has stayed with her ever since. Ultimately both my parents’ stories emphasise the importance of resilience even in difficult circumstances. As their child I learned not only the value of hard work but also the power of having positive relationships alongside it – something I try to embody daily
