In terms of staffing and organization, Tamburello et al (2017) report that most states lack adequate resources for providing necessary services to inmates with mental illness. Furthermore, they argue that existing staff may not be adequately trained or experienced in providing quality care to those with serious mental illnesses. It stands to reason then that improving access to quality mental healthcare will require significant shifts in organizational infrastructure with improved training for workers and support for treatment plans tailored towards individual inmates' needs. Along these lines, Tamburello et al (2017) discuss the importance of developing collaborative relationships between criminal justice personnel and clinicians when administering treatment in corrections settings. In order to provide comprehensive care while remaining mindful of safety concerns it is important that personnel be able to effectively collaborate across disciplines including social work, psychology, psychiatry, substance abuse counseling etc., so that everyone involved can have an understanding of what each role entails in terms of responsibilities related specifically to offender rehabilitation and treatment plans. Overall this study provides valuable insights into how correctional administrators should prioritize their efforts when providing adequate mental health care within their facilities. As discussed throughout this article it is clear that significant changes must be made if we are going to ensure individuals with severe illness receive appropriate clinical treatments while also keeping all personnel safe from harm within the context of our prisons system . It is my hope however that through continued research we can eventually make meaningful improvements which will result in better outcomes for both inmates needing assistance and staff working hard everyday ensuring their safety
