A counselor must consider all aspects when tailoring their approach in order to effectively address clients’ concerns in the context of their gender and sexual orientation. A good starting point might be creating an environment that is safe and nonjudgmental where these topics can be discussed openly without fear of ridicule or criticism. It is also important for counselors to acknowledge any power dynamics at play between themselves and their clients so that they do not inadvertently reproduce oppressive systems through privilege-informed tactics like giving advice instead providing support .
