Use the ‘Dinner Story’ video provided to create an EAF (ELAN annotation file):
I. In the EAF, provide a written English transcription of the speech on one tier, representing each sentence in a separate annotation.
2. On a second tier, classify each of the gestures as:
(a) beat
(b) iconic
(c) metaphoric
(d) deictic
(e) emblem or
(f) or some other category we have discussed in this subject.
3. On a third tier, select five of the gestures, and analyse the movement features involved in the preparation, stroke, hold and recovery .
4. Discuss your analysis of (2) and (3), providing some explanation for your classification and movement analysis of the gestures and any difficulties in applying the categories in the task.
Of the five gestures you have analysed in terms of movement features, explain if the gesture is the only gesture phrase in the gesture unit, or if the unit involves a series of gesture phrases.
Discuss the co-timing of the gestures: what words are co-timed with the onset of the gesture?
What word is co-timed with the stroke of the gesture?
Describe the meaningful aspects of the gesture, and how it combines with the speech to produce a composite utterance.
