FINDING BOOKS
This week you will begin to find sources that help you explore your research question. For this assignment, you will find two non-fiction books (that are not reference books or textbooks). You must use books, in either print or ebook form, from Taft College Library. (Links to an external site.) You may not use any other library, Google Books, or other websites.

Reviewing Books

You must be able to examine the complete content of the books you select, either in physical form or online. You do not have to read the entire book, but you do have to skim, scan, and read parts of the book in order to answer the evaluation questions below and write a meaningful annotation. For example: look closely at the table of contents; read the introduction and conclusion chapters, if the book has them; read the first and last few paragraphs of each chapter; look at the Index, if there is one. Take notes about the purpose and content of the book, and its relevance to your research question.

CITING BOOKS
We will cite our sources in MLA citation style, 8th edition.

The basic MLA 8th ed. citation format for a print book is:

Author Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book in Italics. Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example (note that second author is listed with the first name first):

Klein, Naomi. This Changes Everything : Capitalism Vs. the Climate. Simon & Schuster, 2014.

The basic MLA 8th ed. citation format for an ebook is:

Author Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book in Italics. Publisher, Year of Publication. Database Name, DOI or durable URL.

Example:(note that second author is listed with the first name first)

Foster, John Bellamy, et al. The Ecological Rift : Capitalism’s War on the Earth. Monthly Review Press, 2010. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=516474&site=ehost-live.

Zaretsky, Michael and Adrian Parr. New Directions in Sustainable Design. Routledge, 2011. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=336592&site=ehost-live.

Be sure to indent each line after the first line of the citation.

The citation will differ slightly if the book lists editors instead of authors, an edition other than the first, or multiple volumes. For further guidance citing books, refer to our textbook or consult Purdue OWL. (Links to an external site.)

ANNOTATING BOOKS
The final project for this course is an annotated bibliography. According to Purdue Owl, (Links to an external site.) when writing an annotated bibliography, the citation for each source is followed by a summary about the source.

Each source will include a summary of the content of the source an evaluation of the source, including the credibility of the source and how useful is the source in helping you explore your research question.

Write your annotated bibliography for one of your two book sources. Use the following questions* to help guide your writing:

Summarize: If a friend asked you what the source (in this case the book) is about, how would you reply? What is the purpose, what is the point of this source? What argument is the author(s) making?

Evaluate: How does this source help you answer or explore your research question? How has this source changed how you think about your topic? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? How do you know? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal or purpose of this source? (You might want to use the questions in the C.R.A.A.P. Test (Links to an external site.)courtesy of California State University, Chico).

DETAILED SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Your document should include the following sections:

Name, Course Information, and Date
Include your full name, our course information (Information Competency and Bibliography INCO 1048-44), and the date at the top of the first page. (Review the uploaded sample paper).
Research Question
Include your approved research question (Week 4: Research Summary Assignment).
Book Citations and Evaluations
Create MLA (8th edition.) citations for two books that address your research question. Arrange your sources in alphabetical order, as you would in a bibliography.
Copy the following three questions into your document, and answer each question individually (not in paragraph form) and separately for each book, immediately following that book’s citation. Use your own words (do not copy text from the book or from elsewhere).
Describe the purpose and summarize the content of the source. For example, is the author seeking to provide information, to persuade, to present the results of research, to entertain, or to do something else? Who is the intended audience of the source? What kind of information is covered? What specific arguments are made, and how are they made? What is the nature of any research presented? How is it presented?
Evaluate the credibility of the source. Is the information reliable? How do you know? Is this source objective or biased? Does it present multiple points of view? Does the author cite their sources? What credentials or expertise does the author have?
Evaluate the usefulness of the source in addressing your research question. How does this source help you explore your research question? How does it change the way you think about your topic? What new questions does it raise for you? How does it compare with other sources you have found?
Book Citation and Annotation
Choose one of your books to annotate, and include that book’s citation at the beginning of this section.
Combine your answers to the questions above into an annotation for this book, elaborating if necessary. A complete annotation should be at least 150 words and should be about one third summary and about two thirds evaluation. You must use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Type in complete sentences, not phrases, and use your own words.
Part 2A
This week, please complete each of the following:
Completing the Square Song – Winnie the Pooh (Links to an external site.)Completing the Square Song – Winnie the PoohWatch this video on completing the square from You Tube.
What is something in school you learned through a song, or a rhyme, that you will never forget? Many of us learned the classic alphabet song as children, so don’t use this example, please. Make a video of yourself sharing your song or rhyme, or alternatively, find someone else online singing or reciting the song or rhyme and post a link to the video. Please make sure they video has the option to enable closed captioning should another student need the captioning. That the video either has captions built in, or has the option to enable them, will be 1/5 pts on this weeks assignment. The purpose of this discussion is to share something you learned with song or rhyme related to a subject at school. I would prefer it be related to Math, but it can be related to any school subject.
