You have begun the paradigmatic shift to thinking about systems versus individual treatment and the module’s readings and lectures have introduced assessment strategies for systems treatment. Commonly prescribed starting points in couples and family treatment involve obtaining a family history and timelines via genograms. However, it is now widely accepted that genograms must be expanded to address the community and cultural contexts of couple and family relationships. One of your readings for this module addresses the need for family counselors to develop this skill. The second offers an example of such a culturally sensitive genogram for African-American families.
Tasks:
In a minimum of 200 words, post to the Discussion Area your response to the following:
• List the article or chapter you have read to expand your understanding of cultural or community genograms.
• Referring to the above, discuss your learning about community or cultural genograms as related to your future role as a counselor working with couples and families.
• Discuss how your reading relates to the systems approach to couples and family counseling.
• Generate two questions in a cultural or community genogram assessment and briefly describe your rationale for asking these questions.
Support your rationale and analysis by using at least two resources from professional literature in your response. Professional literature may include online library resources; relevant textbooks; peer-reviewed journal articles; and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu or .gov).
Your discussion posts and all written assignments should reflect graduate-level writing skills and appropriate use
