Use the readings provided on in this Module’s Overview page on one-dimensional elementary Cellular
Automata, build the first 10 generations of a 1-D elementary Cellular Automata given the information listed
below.(20 points)
The size of the grid is 8 cells, and apply Edges wrap around. The initial population values are given as
generation 0 and they are defined as 0 1 1 0 0 1 0 0.
Apply Rule 75 (Links to an external site.) to generate each of the 10 generations (10 points). Put your
results in a table in a Word or Excel file, using either 1s and 0s, or black (for 1) and white (or another dark
color for 0 ) blocks. An easy way to do that is to create a grid of cells in a spreadsheet, and then use
background/fill color on each cell, according to the rule (Rule 75). Show each generation as a separate
row, as show in several of the 1D CA video lectures.
Task 1B: In your file, include the following: what are the four classifications of behavior the one-
dimensional cellular automata exhibit? Give a brief definition of each and 2 rules for each category.
Identify the rule examples by their number. You can use the Wolfram Alpha site for see and look up the
rules and patterns (8 points)
Task 1C: In your own words, describe why the importance of cellular automata, and illustrate it with an
example (7 points).
