Diversity considerations
Following the review of the Carl Whitaker Family Therapy video and Chapter 7 of the text, discuss any diversity considerations involved in the video. What factors within the case have the most relevance to Wally’s, Aaron’s father, world view? Would you as a therapist directly address his history of Polio when that was not the original presenting complaint? Can you envision yourself referring to a client as a “cripple”? How did Dr. Whitaker explain this focus upon the client’s illness?

I believe that directly addressing Wally’s experience with polio would be beneficial for both him and Aaron since it can help them better understand each other’s perspective on their relationship – particularly since Wally’s disability may have affected their interactions in some way. This can also open up discussion about how the experience has changed his outlook on life and informed his current behaviour.
While I wouldn't personally refer to clients or patients as “cripples", I understand why Dr. Whitaker did so in this specific case; Aaron's father had already referred to himself as one during earlier sessions, which speaks volumes about the impact that polio has had on him throughout his life and its role in shaping who he is today. In addition, using such language allowed Whitaker to bring attention to the issue without patronizing either party involved - showing respect for all individuals present while still giving voice those experiences which otherwise may remain unheard Ultimately then these strategies served validating acknowledging everyone\'s unique contributions meeting create richer more meaningful dialogue moving forward
