Select two educational psychology issues that you will have to
address as a counselor. (The paper should
run six pages—plus your references—APA
style: double spaced, 12pt Times New Roman
font) and include a minimum of four
references from a peer-reviewed journal. The
references should be presented at the end of
the paper in APA style. Alternatively, you may
choose one large issue and do a more indepth exploration of this one issue.
Section I: Thesis Statement (two to three paragraphs). In this section, describe the goals of the paper.
Incorporate within this section what you envision your role the role of a counselor to be (you can draw on other
coursework for this) and give an overall view of why you chose the subject(s) you chose. If there is an
overarching theme that runs through your subjects, point it out. If not, discuss very broadly why you found your
subject(s) compelling. (If there were theories we discussed in class that relate to your subject matter, this would
be a good time to point this out.)Somewhere in your thesis statement, please operationalize educational
psychology (see Powerpoint from Class I). You may use the Ormond, Anderman & Anderman’s (2020)
statement from Chapter I on what subjects fall under the rubric of educational psychology or draw from another
approach—but you must cite the original source. (You may not use Wikipedia as this source, but you can use it
as a starting point to find the source).
Section II. Your Two Issues– two pages per issue (or four if you have chosen only one large issue). For each of
the issues you choose, do the following:1) Define the issue: Outline the parameters of the problem and explain
why the topic you chose is a concern/challenge in the world of education in general and for a counselor in
particular. Give specific and timely examples whenever possible. Relate the issue to your reading for class
whenever possible. You may draw from the news, the textbook, or your own experiences to establish that your
concern is current or pressing. (You must cite news sources in APA style.)If you are using the textbook as your
source, you may simply cite (Ormond et. al, 2020). If you are bringing in a direct quote from the textbook,
however, you must cite the page. Please keep direct quotes short and judiciously chosen. You may use the
textbook to point you to your four peer-reviewed studies (although you certainly don’t need to). Please cite your
studies as original sources, as per APA.2) Present current research on the issue: For the purposes of this
class, we will define current very broadly. Anything since 1990 is fine. Find at least two academic studies
related to each issue from a peer-reviewed journal. Please note what kind of study you are describing using
some of the vocabulary we discussed in Class 1 (see PowerPoint from that class). Summarize the article using
the abstract, the review of the literature and
the conclusion parts of the article. Describe what the article contributed to your understanding of the issue. 3)
Research Conclusions: For each of the issues you discussed, where would you suggest future research focus?
With what age group and what population? What kind of study design would you recommend? Speculate how
this future research might be of assistance to counselors. IV: Personal Reflection and Interview (two
paragraphs)Anticipate a scenario where you might encounter this issue and describe the scenario and how you
would handle it. Afterwards, speak to at least one parent or student, in the appropriate age range (based on the
scenario you describe). How do they think the same scenario should have been handled? How does this differ
from what you did? What, if anything, did you learn from this interaction?IV: Closing remarks: one to two
paragraphs. Please discuss any general conclusions you reached about the role of a school counselor after
having completing your research for this paper. This can be brutally honest. It is your opinion; no judgements
will be made on content. It just has to be presented in the requested format. Formatting
You may divide each issue into individual sections and may be presented using the subheadlines offered in this
outline. You are also welcome to use a different format of organization as long as you include all the
information.
