Expressed goal of helping African-American students

A particular charter school in a local school district has been set up with the expressed goal of helping African-American students increase performance and scores on standardized tests in basic math, reading, and science. They also have a philosophy of Afro-centric education, which has caused political controversy in the district. After three years, the charter school has come under fire within the district for its Afro-centric focus. The staff is defensive and feels misunderstood by the larger school district. In the past, the school struck a careful balance between goals of performance improvement in traditional topics of math, reading, and science and programs reflecting Afro-centric education. However, in the most recent year, almost all of the focus has been on defending the Afro-centric philosophy.
