You have been fighting in the trenches of World War I for almost a year now. In several "charges," you have seen your fellow doughboys gunned down by opposing machine gunners stationed in the trenches facing yours. To some of your fellow soldiers, any further attacks on such a fortified position seem hopeless. Yet there is talk of another such attack tomorrow at dawn. It is the night before this scheduled attack, and you are writing a letter home to the states. How do you feel about the war at this time? And what are your feelings about the upcoming attack and your role in the war effort?
I feel an immense amount of sorrow for those who have lost their lives in this senseless conflict – they never had the chance to live out their dreams or experience what life was like outside of these trenches. Yet despite all the hardship and death around me, I still retain a sense of responsibility towards protecting not only my comrades but also my country from further harm . This feeling alone keeps me going even though we are asked to make yet another ‘charge’ into enemy lines tomorrow at dawn..
The thought of facing such insurmountable odds frightens me greatly however necessity ensure safety others compels stay course . We can only hope that somehow victory achieved through courage sacrifice every soldier involved .. Despite situation now face let keep faith , remain brave fight hard until final day comes whatever results may be ...
