Consider the primary objectives served for both
employer and workers in implementing programs of this nature, including implications for union activity or
organizing.
In an essay of approximately 800 words, explain the following:
the benefits to management of implementing these newer work organization structures and programs, and the
risks of not doing so;
the reasons that workers in a nonunion environment would benefit from such structures and programs and how
this might affect their attitudes toward unions or unionization; and
the reasons that unions would engage in labor–management partnerships and why some union proponents
might resist these efforts.
Include supporting information, along with appropriate citation in full APA format from the lesson’s core
readings, along with any other quality academic sources you research.
In the first paragraph, the instructions mention that you should be looking at “several examples of companies
and workers, both in union and nonunion settings, making use of various forms of labor–management
partnerships and other methods of fostering flexibility, employee empowerment, and voice.” You will find these
kinds of examples well-presented in the Budd Chapter, and may receive more ideas of possible partnershiptype structures presented as well in the commentary and shorter readings. I expect you to use some of these
structures as specific examples supporting arguments you make in response to the prompts.
Regarding the three prompts:
In response to the first prompt: (1) list at least two benefits to management of introducing newer work
organizational structures or programs; (2) list at least two risks of introducing such programs; (3) incorporate at
least one specific example of a situation or program to justify your argument that the newer structures or
programs can be beneficial to management; and at least one specific example of a situation or program to
justify your argument that the newer structures or programs can pose risks to management.
In response to the second prompt: (1) list at least two reasons why you think non-union workers could benefit
from newer work organizational structures or programs; (2) discuss at least two ways which you think these
newer structures or programs could affect these workers’ attitudes on unions and unionization; and (3)
incorporate at least one specific example of a situation or program to justify your argument that the newer
structures or programs can be beneficial to non-union workers; and (4) at least one specific example of a
situation or program to justify your argument concerning how you think these new structures or programs can
impact the views of non-union workers on unions and unionization.
In response to the third prompt: (1) list at least two reasons why unions would engage in labor-management
partnerships; (2) list at least two reasons why some union proponents might resist these efforts; (3) incorporate
at least one specific example of a situation or program to support arguments you make as to why unions would
engage in labor-management partnerships; and (4) at least one specific example of a situation or program to
justify why some union proponents might resist labor-management partnerships.
Finally, please remember to use – when you need them – outside research sources, and to cite them properly.
