Frats and sororities act as gangs
Gangs are integral to the story, and the community. Research the history of gangs in the United States. Explain why they exist. What types exist? For what purposes? How do gangs affect the communities in which they exist, both in real life and in The Hate U Give? What are the ripple effects? What are the pros and cons of gangs? How do drugs enter the equation? Why do humans have the desire to form organizations? Analyze psychology and anthropology
The reasons behind the formation of gangs vary greatly depending on their purpose, but overall they usually represent some form of need for identity, structure, power and belonging among its members (Barajas et al., 2017). This is evidenced in The Hate U Give where Starr's father explains that her uncles joined a gang because it provided them with an extended family when their own had been taken away due to poverty and systemic racism (Thomas, 2017). In this way it was able to meet certain needs that weren't being met elsewhere while also giving them protection from others who may wish them harm. It is also important to recognize that there are real life benefits associated with joining these types of organizations like education resources or employment opportunities which can help people get out of poverty when access is otherwise limited (Barajas et al., 2017).
On the other hand there are many negative effects associated with gang activity ranging from increased levels of violence in areas they inhabit through to greater spread of drug related issues like addiction or overdose rates. There is also evidence that suggests gang activity has been linked to higher rates of incarceration among its members due to increases in risk taking behaviours as well as police targeting individuals based on preconceived notions about what constitutes a ‘gang member’ rather than any actual involvement in crime (Hochstetler & Martinez 2016). These issues all play out significantly within The Hate U Give which highlights both how involvement in these types organizations can be attractive but ultimately dangerous if you don’t know when enough is enough .
Drugs often enter the equation due to their high profitability for criminal organisations looking for quick ways make money without getting caught by law enforcement . This has led them increase presence market leading more unsuspecting people becoming addicted furthering problem even worse (Hochstetler & Martinez 2016) . Similarly fraternities sororities found college campuses across America have similar characteristics although typically not considered technically ‘gangs’ play role same things mentioned above albeit slightly less severe context since main focus group stays within campus rather than street level potential damage done much lower scale generally
